A Father to One but a Father Figure to Many. Mr. Ramanathan was known to be a calm and rational figure to all who knew him. He was never averse to help those in need and often was the one beacon of stability during times of indecisions.
Mr. Ramanathan spent his entire career in the Post and Telegraphs retiring as a Director from MTNL. He joined the P&T in Burdwan as a Junior Telegrapher in the 1940s and worked his way up across Kolkata and Mumbai to help MTNL set up its online Billing Platform, initially outsourced to TCS and later inhouse at the Malabar Hill Exchange Building. A lot of breakthroughs and introductions are associated with his name.

I can't think of Raman thatha without remembering his elder brother, my own thatha Sundaresan. Raman thatha was gentle, kind and possesed a great sense of humor, a trait he has passed on to Venu uncle. I'd like to think both thatha's are at peace and are watching over the rest of us,together.
Adjectives which can be attached to Raman Periappa- Wise, noble,Honest and caring. While I was doing my schooling at Trichy,I recall the few times he used to visit us.The interactions were few,but it was always “Ennada Murali eppadi irukke” with his trademark wide smile. He loved to visit the Kaveri river and I recall his swimming prowess at one of the dams called Kallanai dam( The grand anicut).I later learnt from appa that all the 3 brothers are ace swimmers, gained from their Pond baths at Peruvamba. My first close interaction came during the time I went to Mumbai for my Management stint. It was 3 weeks at his Dadar apartment. He took time to explain the Mumbai city and the trains as the city can be daunting for a newcomer. He patiently explained the nuances of the many peculiarities of the city which came to good use in tackling the daily grind.Every evening when I returned home,he used to enquire about my day and ensured that I had my daily dose of fruits ( He used to assiduously cut fruits by 7pm to be eaten after dinner,a trait which I saw in all the 3 brothers) The Chennai days were possibly the period when I saw him in close quarters.I always relished the sight of the 3 brothers huddled together and talking on wide range of topics.Periappa always used to take the lead and I never heard or saw them being bitchy, angry or rude.It was always a pleasant conversation with big smiles and laughter. No wonder Appa is missing the 2 periappas!. Periappa’s knowledge was wide and varied. He could talk on any subject and it was always a deep-sighted analysis.Cricket to Weather to Politics to Films to Internet…you can name any subject. This also ensured that the kids were drawn to him.Rochana loved to visit B6/4 just for spending the time with periappa. We miss his overarching presence..the wide smile..the wisdom…
I keep staring at this message board....trying hard to put feelings to words on how much he is missed ....June 11th 2012 is still fresh in my mind.. I still close my eyes and remember his excitement about our trip,, the research he did before going and his joy when he landed in kashmir...the shock and pain of his loss is very hard to get over. Truely a father figure for all of us... Our times in the evening when periamma was away in Medical centre will always be cherished by me. He had the gift of making conversation with a 6 yr old or a 60 yr old.... One never felt out of place when we sat with him... Attaching an old pic of me with mama and periamma.... I hope he is still looking out for me the way he is in that pic...With love and affection. Thank god that I was lucky enough to have such a wonderful uncle... Will always miss him...
